Strategize-Align-Execute-Results
We participate in the development of the organization's strategies although we do not perceive ourselves as strategy developers.
However, we do help in the effective communication of the vision and strategies throughout the organization because, without a full understanding, the chances are significantly reduced that full execution of the strategies will occur.
We do actively engage in the selection of the strategic metrics that are measurable thoughout the organization's breadth and depth. These are critical to the effective implementation of the Alignment phase.
Align
Step 1.
Review the strategic plan and interview the senior team and selected employees to determine their understanding and cohesiveness of vision and strategic plans.
Step 2.
Review current alignment components, if they exist, and assign ratings and weightings to each.
Based upon this analysis, recommend strategic metrics, process improvement, communication improvements, roles and responsibilities, etc.
Steps 3 to 5.
Same as Step 2 but externally to three groups ... customers, suppliers, trusted advisors.
Step 6.
Develop an IT communication "conduit" for the above alignment constituencies that produces an easy to understand, timely sharing of the strategy metrics at the appropriate level of detail for each constituency.
Step 7.
Monthly involvement to ensure the strategy execution process continues.
Execute
We are not involved in day to day execution … that is the responsibility of the senior team.
However, we are involved monthly to review the strategic metrics and offer an unbiased point of view of progress or if “muddling “ is occuring.
Furthermore, if material things change then it is important to get consensus on strategy change and re-alignment.
Results
Actual results, as we all know, depend on a multiple of factors.
However, if the right critical success factors are identified, the strategies and their metrics are well thought out, the internal and external alignment components put in place and executed, then results achieved should exceed those set out in the original 1 to 3 year plans.
